    What triggers hair loss?

Lifestyle choices such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and high-sugar diets can lead to issues with the scalp. Additionally, crash dieting can negatively impact hair health. As hair is non-essential tissue, it’s often the first to suffer nutrient deficiencies from an inadequate diet, leading to excessive shedding.

It’s also advisable to monitor how tightly you secure your ponytail, as this can contribute to traction alopecia, potentially pulling hairs from their roots.

    How to enhance hair growth?

The general rule is that better overall health often translates to healthier hair. Rather than relying solely on products, it’s crucial to focus on improving lifestyle habits.

    Avoid crash diets

According to Dr. Lindsey Bordone, a dermatologist affiliated with ColumbiaDoctors and an assistant professor at Columbia University Medical Center, some factors affecting hair growth are beyond our control. However, avoiding certain habits can prevent stunted growth and increased shedding.

“Restrictive diets can limit the nutrients essential for hair growth,” Dr. Bordone warns.

“Because hair growth is a low priority compared to other physiological functions, restrictive dieting quickly halts its progress due to stress,” she notes.

“Even after returning to a normal diet, shedding may persist for several months,” Dr. Bordone adds.

Rapid weight loss might lead to temporary shedding known as telogen effluvium (TE) or diffuse alopecia, often attributed to a deficiency in niacin.

“If your diet is overly restrictive, optimal hair growth will falter, leading to shedding,” she emphasizes.

“Maintaining a balanced diet rich in protein is vital for healthy hair growth,” she indicates. “Aiming for at least 50 grams of protein daily is advisable.”

A well-rounded diet filled with vitamins and minerals is essential for fostering hair growth. Critical nutrients include:
    – **Protein**: Since hair is predominantly composed of a protein called keratin, consume sufficient protein from eggs, fish, lean meats, and legumes.

    – **Biotin**: This B vitamin is crucial for hair health. Sources of biotin include nuts, seeds, sweet potatoes, and spinach.

    – **Iron**: Insufficient iron can lead to hair loss. Incorporate iron-rich foods like red meat, lentils, beans, and dark leafy greens into your meals.

    – **Omega-3 Fatty Acids**: These beneficial fats nourish hair follicles. Found in fish, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds, they are important for hair health.

    Let Hair Dry Naturally

Wet hair is highly elastic. Brushing it when soaked can result in breakage or harm to the cuticle, the protective layer surrounding each hair strand. Applying heat tools on soggy hair can also cause damage. If your hair is straight, allow it to air-dry first before gently combing it with a wide-tooth comb. For curly or textured hair, carefully detangle with a wide-tooth comb while still damp.

    Regular Scalp Stimulation
Performing regular scalp massages boosts blood circulation, delivering crucial nutrients to hair follicles and encouraging growth. Use your fingers to softly massage your scalp daily for a few minutes. Consider adding oils like coconut, castor, or rosemary oil for extra benefits.

    Limit Heat Exposure

The heat from styling tools such as curling irons, hairdryers, and straighteners may weaken your hair and lead to breakage. To minimize damage, reduce the frequency of these tools and lower their temperature settings.

Moreover, a 2019 research review found that applying heat-protectant sprays before styling could significantly decrease hair breakage.

Heat protectants create a barrier that helps retain moisture when using hot tools.

    Schedule Regular Haircuts

    Hair Growth
How can a haircut promote hair growth? Trimming removes the ends, which are the most fragile parts of the strands. Neglecting the ends could lead to split ends, which travel up the hair shaft and shorten your locks. Aim for a trim of about 1/4 inch every three months to safeguard growth since hair typically grows around 1/2 inch per month.

    Choose Suitable Hair Products

Selecting the appropriate shampoo and conditioner is essential. Look for sulfate- and paraben-free products as they can strip natural oils and cause harm. Opt for formulations with natural ingredients that are designed to boost hair growth and reinforce hair structures.

    Manage Stress Levels

Considerable stress may push hair into a dormant stage, skipping the growth phase. It can increase the risk of alopecia areata, a condition in which the immune system targets hair follicles, and trichotillomania, a compulsion to pull out hair. Reducing stress in life or finding ways to manage it can promote hair regrowth.

    Avoid Frequent Washing

Over-washing can strip hair of its natural oils, resulting in dryness and potential breakage. Aim to wash your locks 2 to 3 times weekly, tailoring this to your hair type. Use lukewarm water instead of hot to prevent exacerbating dryness.

    Be Cautious with Hair Color

    DIY Hair Coloring
Bleaching and chemical treatments like perms weaken hair, increasing the likelihood of breakage before reaching your desired length. If coloring, aim for a shade close to your natural hue, ideally within three shades. This minimizes damage from peroxide. Always perform a patch test if using store-bought dye.

    Consult a Doctor Regarding Minoxidil

Minoxidil can help prevent hair loss and stimulate growth. Often available over-the-counter as Rogaine, this treatment may not be effective for everyone and could take up to a year for noticeable results. It’s best used as part of a comprehensive hair loss treatment strategy rather than alone.

Prescription options for hair loss include spironolactone (Aldactone) and finasteride (Propecia). Some medications, such as beta-blockers and amphetamines, may also cause hair loss. Discuss alternatives with your physician if this occurs.

    Protect Your Hair During Sleep

To foster healthy hair during sleep, consider the following tips:
    – Ensure you’re getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep nightly, as inadequate sleep lowers melatonin production, which influences hair growth.
    – Use silk or satin pillowcases to reduce friction and tangling, helping to prevent breakage.

    Mind Extensions and Braids

While extensions or weaves may seem like a quick fix for length, avoid wearing them longer than 2 to 3 months. Never attempt to remove them yourself, as this can harm your hair and scalp. If your extensions, braids, or weaves are painful, they are too tight and could damage your hair. Request adjustments from your stylist.

Shield Your Hair from Environmental Damage

Exposure to elements such as sun, pollution, and severe weather can compromise hair integrity. Protect your hair by wearing hats or scarves during extended outdoor activities. Additionally, look for hair products with UV protection to safeguard against sun damage.

    Avoid Rapid Weight Loss

When losing weight, ensure your hair doesn’t suffer along the way. Just as stress contributes to hair loss, so can sudden weight changes. Inadequate protein intake can cause the body to prioritize other functions over hair growth. Normal hair regrowth will occur once nutrition improves, but a gradual, healthy approach to dieting is preferable for both your hair and overall well-being.

Achieving instant hair growth isn’t a reality, yet implementing certain practices can enhance hair health and growth. Prioritizing a nutritious, balanced diet with sufficient protein is essential, along with using specific products and treatments. Limiting heat exposure and chemical alterations will also contribute to healthier hair.

If hair loss is a concern or if you struggle to promote hair growth, consult a healthcare professional for guidance on underlying causes and potential
